Today seeds, tomorrow flowers

Comuneros, social art & community

“Today seeds, tomorrow flowers” emerges as a collective pop-up exhibition showcasing artistic processes inspired by the lived impressions in the southwestern region of Colombian territory — Cauca. Cauca is a department in southwestern Colombia, known for its diverse geography and cultural richness, with significant indigenous populations. Its capital is Popayán, and the region is notable for agricultural production and historical significance, but has also faced challenges such as armed conflict and drug trafficking.

This project brings together artists and artistic collectives, who contribute through art and culture to the to social impact and non-formal education of the diverse towns and communities that make up the social tissue of the region. These include indigenous peoples, farming communities, Afro-descendant communities, victims of violence and marginalised neighbourhoods.

This initiative underscores the transformative power of art as a vehicle for cultural exchange and community development, prioritising the needs and narratives of the communities over individual artistic endeavours. Artists engage directly with communities in Cauca, facilitating intercultural dialogue, strengthening social bonds, and promoting mutual understanding through artistic activities and interactions. By providing access to art in local environments, particularly to marginalised individuals, the exhibition empowers communities, fosters self-expression and creativity, and facilitates personal and communal growth.

Importantly, the initiative emphasises the role of art in inspiring, educating, and unifying people, promoting cultural inclusion, and addressing societal issues on both local and global scales.

Through its commitment to cultural equity and celebration of diversity, “Today Seeds, Tomorrow Flowers” transcends geographical boundaries, extending its impact from Cauca, Colombia, to Dichtersbuurt in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
